A Literary Dilemma

Tuesday, August 28, 2007
I am having a hard time trying to find something new to read. I just munched through a few new novels by Charles de Lint, got tired of the taste of theology after biting into "Judaism" (never was really ever able to make the jump to monotheism) in Smith's World Religions, devoured a massive book of poetry from around the world, and washed down with a fine vintage compiling some of Pablo Neruda's works (a new favorite).

But I am still hungry (and thirsty). I wonder if a meat and potatoes entree like Whitman's Leaves of Grass, more exotic faire like the Bahagadvita(sp?), something pungent and more of an acquired taste like Joyce's Ulysses, or maybe a more classical selection, like the Odyssey.

But I am not sure.

I guess I want to read something that I will be able to use on the show. Maybe I need a collection of stories from around the world. I want to find human norms.

Maybe I should just break down and read the books (now 2) written by the guy we knew during our high-school days... maybe if I can get them at the used book store for a few bucks.

Anyway, suggestions are more than welcome.

  • OK,

So, very late to post, but if you haven't read it yet, you have to read Hawaii by Michener. Skip the first chapter or so, which is just geology posing as novel.

There are lots of religious undercurrents, especially of new gods replacing the old and what that means for people.

Just catching up on the last month of posts now...

  • Yeah. You gave me that for my birthday a few years ago and I never finished it - not because it was bad. I think I just moved into my Joseph Campbell phase at that time. I started reading it again last night.
